The East Ranga is one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world. In 2023 the river was second best in Iceland with 2606 salmon caught for the 18 rods. Even though that is a pretty decent catch it is not come close to our best years. It follows the trend in Iceland which had a pretty bad year overall. It has been a strange summer indeed with catches in most rivers below average. In west Iceland it has not helped that it has not rained for one and a half month and the rivers are in dire need of water. On a lighter note the fishing has been quite good in the Ranga rivers lately with catches per day up to 70 salmon. The spring fishing for trout and sea run trout opened in Iceland on April first. In general the fishing has been very good and for example there have been 220 sea trout caught in Laxa in Kjos alone. One angler in river Geirlandsa caught one of the largest sea trout ever cought, measuring well over 20 pounds. Lake þingvellir has also been in good form with some stunning trout caught like the one Björn is holding on the photo. Tight lines Johann David - johann@kolskeggur.is

Finally we are here, the season in Iceland starts tomorrow on April 1st and this is no joke! Most of the seatrout rivers will open and many of the lakes and streams for brown and arctic char as well. We have had quite a long cold spell here in Iceland but things are looking better for tomorrow with temps well above zero so the rivers should be fishable. We will bring you news of the openings after the weekend. Tight lines Johann David - johann@kolskeggur.is

There are thousands upon thousands of salmon that run through Hólsá on their way to the Ranga rivers and many of them are caught in Hólsá. Hólsá has an excellent self catering lodge with six…
