As the autumn gets closer the fishing gets slower for the most part, but there are exceptions to the rule. Many rivers have been battling drought all summer and when it started to rain the fishing picked up as well. The Ranga rivers also opened up for worm and spinner from 1st of September which gave a boost in results. Fishing has slowed down overall but we are still seeing good catches in the Ranga rivers. The West Ranga had a more productive week than the East and has thus snatched the top spot for the first time this summer. It will be exciting to see which river finishes on top in the end of the season, my money is on the East Ranga. Pictured is a 65 cm arctic char taken in beat 9 in East Ranga. We have been experiencing a very cold spring and summer with temperatures only in the region of 5-9c. This seems to have had an effect on the runs of salmon as the start in most rivers has been very slow. The numbers from the first days published June 16th are as follows: Urriðafoss - Þjórsá (opened 01.06) 194 salmon Norðurá (opened 04.06) 39 salmon Þverá + Kjarará (opened 05.06) 35 salmon Miðjarðará (opened 15.06) 13 salmon Laxá in Kjós (opened 15.06) 3 salmon Eystri Rangá (opened 15.06) 3 salmon Hítará (opened 15.06) 3 salmon Straumarnir…
The salmon season has started in Iceland with good results. First in line to open was the Urriðafoss in river Þjórsá and the opening day gave 14 salmon - all MWS up to 93cm. The famous river Norðurá opened today on June 4th and with a few good salmon landed before lunch. Tomorrow river Blanda will open and we are excited to hear how the opening will be there. Picture is of a 87 cm salmon from Norðurá this morning. Johann David - johann@kolskeggur.is
