We have been experiencing a very cold spring and summer with temperatures only in the region of 5-9c. This seems to have had an effect on the runs of salmon as the start in most rivers has been very slow. The numbers from the first days published June 16th are as follows: Urriðafoss - Þjórsá (opened 01.06) 194 salmon Norðurá (opened 04.06) 39 salmon Þverá + Kjarará (opened 05.06) 35 salmon Miðjarðará (opened 15.06) 13 salmon Laxá in Kjós (opened 15.06) 3 salmon Eystri Rangá (opened 15.06) 3 salmon Hítará (opened 15.06) 3 salmon Straumarnir…
The salmon season has started in Iceland with good results. First in line to open was the Urriðafoss in river Þjórsá and the opening day gave 14 salmon - all MWS up to 93cm. The famous river Norðurá opened today on June 4th and with a few good salmon landed before lunch. Tomorrow river Blanda will open and we are excited to hear how the opening will be there. Picture is of a 87 cm salmon from Norðurá this morning. Johann David - johann@kolskeggur.is
We are only four days away from the season start in salmon in Iceland. The first rivers to open are the East bank of Holsa (lower Ranga) and Urridafoss on June 1st, then river Nordura opens on June 3rd and Blanda up north on June 4th. We are getting seriously excited about the season opening and already the king of fish has been seen in some rivers. I personally had the good fortune of seeing a few freshly run MWS in river Kjos last weekend and what a sight for sore eyes it was. Welcome…
The sea trout fishing season has now been open for just over two weeks and we are hearing reports of good catches all around. We did experience a few days with very cold weather which put a dampener on the catches but once it got warm again we were in business. I had the good fortune of fishing our very own Holsa east bank and caught the stunning fish pictured. The Holsa is excellent for a group of friends or family fishing as it comes with an excellent lodge right on the riverbank. I caught…
The fishing season in Iceland started on April first and the opening few days have been very successful with the internet filled with photos of happy anglers. Our very own Holsa East Bank opened for sea trout and i was fortunate enough to catch the first fish of the season with ample help from my two sons pictured with the fish. The Holsa is an exciting choice for a group wanting to catch sea trout. It has an excellent self-catering lodge and 15 km of river to fish. We look forward to the next few…
Recently the Icelandic government announced that Iceland will be open to all foreign citizens which have been vaccinated and present a proof there of. This is good news especially for our friends in the US and UK as they can now travel to Iceland for their beloved fishing if they have been vaccinated. So far we have been quite lucky here in Iceland as we have had the pandemic under control in the past few months with very few new infections, in fact Iceland is the only green listed country in Europe at the moment.…
In only 28 days the fishing season will start in Iceland. First to open are the lakes and trout rivers. The early spring is considered prime time for the huge trout in Þingvellir and also for the seatrout in many rivers around the country. We offer great spring fishing in the East Bank of Holsa for sea trout mostly but you can catch the odd brown trout and arctic char as well. After the spring, summer is just around the corner and then the salmon will arrive. We just can’t wait, but in the…
The Holsa can offer very good sea trout fishing both in spring and autumn. In the autumn there is a good chance of salmon as well but is the spring this is pure trout fishing with the odd kelt as well. There has always been a natural stock of sea trout in the Ranga rivers and Holsa. Before salmon was introduced to the rivers the main species of fish was the sea trout. As the rivers are quite big and wide the sea trout has ample space to grow to a respectable size and sea…
Last summer the fishing in East Ranga was spectacular and the river finished the season with 9070 salmon caught. But how was the fishing divided over the river? Which beats are the best? What is the multi winter salmon to grilse ratio? Why is the sky blue? Why will answer those questions in articles with detailed stats about the fishing in the East Ranga this summer, maybe not the last one though, you will have to google that. Gunnar Skuli – head guide deserves a lot of credit and thanks for reading maaaany pages of…
